Year 6 Transition

Year 6 Transition

How we manage the transition to secondary school

At Rokeby School, we believe that a student’s ability to enjoy and achieve is best enhanced by a smooth transition from primary school to secondary school. Our Year 6 transition programme is designed to support every student in settling into secondary school life with ease, maintaining their enthusiasm for learning and sense of achievement.

How We Support a Smooth Transition

We carefully plan the transition process in stages, ensuring that students are not expected to adapt to major changes in teaching style or organisation all at once. Our approach includes:

  • School visits: Partner primary school staff and students are offered multiple opportunities to visit Rokeby School.

  • Data transfer: Swift and efficient transfer of information from primary schools to Rokeby staff ensures that learning needs are identified before the start of Year 7.

  • Targeted planning: Staff use this information to plan lessons, set academic targets, monitor progress, and provide additional support where needed.

  • Parent communication: Families have named contacts and scheduled opportunities to speak with tutors.

  • Student and parent voice: Questionnaires and focus groups allow us to listen and respond to concerns.

  • Caring environment: We foster a welcoming, safe, and reassuring environment for all students.

The transition process begins early, with planned visit and transition days from March to July prior to the September start for Year 7 students. Key dates will be shared closer to the start of the academic year.

Free School Meals

All students in Newham receive free school meals at Primary level. When your child joins secondary school, you will need to check your eligibility for this and apply if needed through the London Borough of Newham. This has to be completed through Newham, and is not something that we can process as a school. Please visit this page on Newham’s website for further information.

Students Starting Rokeby School in September 2026

Before submitting a year 7 application we strongly recommend all families read the 2026/27 edition of the local authorities‘ Starting Secondary School’ guide in order to find out more information about the school(s) you are interested in. If possible look at their virtual tours. Further information on the admissions process can be found here.

Parents/carers can apply for a Year 7 place for September 2026 through the eAdmissions website (www.eadmissions.org.uk).
